Botch Patch Repose Asunder, written for the somewhat unusual combination of violin, guitar (which may be lightly amplified) and trombone, is a conversation among three virtuosos cast in four interconnected movements (music at the end of a movement provides the material for the opening of the next movement), during which the violin and the guitar play music of a more fantastic type, with faster moving lines encompassing a wider range due essentially to the nature of these two instruments. The trombone provides commentary in brief bursts (characterized by sharp accents, glissandi and flutter tongue) and serves to keep the other two instruments "in line," as it were. This state of affairs exists until near the end of the fourth movement, when the trombone, following references to music of the first three movements, definitively asserts itself, playing a cadenza-like passage leading to the close of the work, wherein further references are made to prior movements. The piece ends with a reference to music from the third movement and to the opening harmony. The work is approximately ten and a half minutes long.
