A Trombonist Goes Out For A Walk is a set of four etudes for solo trombone. The trombonist greets others (Greeting, Etude 1); converses with another, somewhat contrary, trombonist (Conversation, Etude 2); reflects upon that odd encounter (Reflection, Etude 3); and then returns home, sprinting and sliding along the way (Sprint and Slide, Etude 4). The first etude, marked Con spirito, essentially consists of music descending by leaps. The second etude, Lento, alternates lyrical and aggressive, staccato music. The third etude, Teneramente, features long, lyrical lines often involving large leaps. The fourth etude, marked Con moto, ma un po’ disorientato, is a mad dash for home featuring descending and ascending chromatic lines, interspersed with abrupt, syncopated glissandi. This etude ends as it began with a brief return to the opening music, but replacing the minor third glissando with a major third glissando.
