My first work for bassoon is essentially an essay in restrained lyrical fantasy. It continues a line of works, all composed in 2018, starting with two solo pieces for guitar and a work for solo alto saxophone, that celebrate virtuosity. Rapid execution is the norm, with lines darting to and fro and notes popping in and out. Like the alto saxophone work, Not Now, But Soon utilizes extended techniques, including, among other things, multiphonics, microtones, harmonics and Berio tremoli. Two motifs run throughout the piece: the “But Soon” motif — based on the notes Bb, C, Eb — is heard at the outset, intermingled with the “bassoon” motif — based on the notes Bb, A, Ab and Eb. These motifs constitute the source material for the entire work and recur in various guises. The work begins and ends boldly, with the music traversing the entire range of the instrument.
