Picking Up Where I Left Off is a short work in 12 movements of varying lengths for violin and piano. The title refers to the opening volley of notes played by the piano. This gesture is a transformation of the same harmony and volley of notes which ends my piano work “Quelle belle journée! (Si seulement j’étais riche) — douze aphorismes pour piano,” also in 12 short movements and composed immediately before the violin and piano piece during fall 2019. The present work, as is true of the piano piece, requires virtuoso technique and roams through a wide variety of moods and temperaments, making subtle references to a handful of composers from the past along the way. The piece lasts just under five minutes.
